A chat with Karrie Gavin, Realtor

Apple Pie or Pumpkin Pie?

Both, but extra apple.

Pumpkin Spiced Coffee all the way – Yay or nay?

Yay, but only once or twice a season.

Which Thanksgiving side dish cannot be missed?

Stuffing.

Favorite comfort dish during the colder months?

Chili – I make a huge batch and eat it all week long or share with friends

Best/favorite thing about the fall season?

Backyard fires, red leaves on trees, and cozy soft clothing.

What’s your favorite spot/neighborhood in the city?

The Wissahickon.

What’s your favorite part of Philadelphia’s rich history?

All of it! I wrote a guidebook (Moon Philadelphia) and nerded out hard on the history! Ben Franklin! Quakers! The Revolution! Philly is the first “planned city” in North American and it has such a great design around the central squares/green spaces.

Beach Vacation, Mountain, or City Trip?

Beach!!! From NJ shore to the islands, I never met a beach I didn’t like!

What are new habits/hobbies during quarantine?

Briefly, adult coloring books and puzzles but that got old pretty fast. Tons of walks in the woods and tons of time at our beach house in Cape may. Books, podcasts and TV. I watched all the Avengers movies and “Anne with an E” with my sons. Thank goodness for Netflix.

What consumption has increased during stay-at-home?

Alcohol, S’mores and figs.

What moved you to become a realtor?

I got lucky. I liked houses and people and when I bought my own house, I thought, “Hmmm, maybe I could do that.” I was a freelance writer and the pay wasn’t great and the days were lonely. I had a kid and needed more money and more time with other people. I tried it out on a whim and sparks flew.

What are you most excited about being a realtor?

Getting to know people and helping them make their dreams come true. Matchmaking people and houses. Every day is different. I never get bored and I never stop learning. There is no ceiling. We don’t have to ask anyone for time off or for a raise. We just have to figure out how to make it happen ourselves. I love working with my team and helping them get where they want to go.

Hardcovers or audio books?

Both. Fiction on paper or kindle on the beach or in bed. I listen to audio books for memoir, politics, career and self improvement while walking or driving.

What’s the most recent book you read?

My Brilliant Friend, Think Like a Monk, and The Hate You Give (I always have 2 or 3 going at a time.)
